PUR & PIR Sandwich Panels for Cold Storage and Clean Rooms
When it comes to building efficient cold storage facilities or sterile clean rooms, the choice of insulation material and panel configuration is critical. PUR (Polyurethane) and PIR (Polyisocyanurate) sandwich panels have become the preferred solution due to their excellent thermal insulation, structural strength, and ease of installation.
1. Panel Composition
Note on R-values:
R-value = Thickness / k-value
For example, a 100 mm (~4 inch) PIR panel with k = 0.022 W/(m·K) gives R ≈ 4.55 m²·K/W (~25.5 ft²·°F·hr/BTU).
2. Panel Dimensions
Standard Thickness: 50–200 mm (~2–8 inch)
Width: 1.0–1.2 m (~39–47 inch)
Length: Up to 12 m (~39.4 ft), customizable
Tip: For cold storage, thicker panels (6–8 inch) are recommended for low-temperature storage below -20°C (-4°F).
3. Key Features
| Fire Rating | Thermal Insulation | Weight | Installation | Environmental | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PUR Panel | B2 (UL 94 HB) | Excellent | Light (~2.5 lb/ft³) | Easy to handle and cut | CFC-free |
| PIR Panel | B1 (UL 94 V-0) | Superior | Slightly heavier (~3 lb/ft³) | Easy, slightly stiffer | CFC-free, better thermal stability |
