Cryogenic PUR Pipe Shell Insulation 60 mm Thick for LNG Chemical Piping
Cryogenic PUR pipe shell insulation has to stay dimensionally stable when the pipe contracts sharply on cool down. The foam is moulded at fifty kilograms per cubic metre with a fine closed cell structure, so the shell flexes with the pipe instead of cracking at the butt joints during the first pull down.
Water absorption below five percent by volume is the key figure for LNG and chemical service, because any moisture that enters the foam will freeze and expand. Our cryogenic PUR pipe shell insulation is therefore supplied with a sealed vapour barrier and taped joints, and we recommend a factory applied cladding for outdoor cryogenic lines.
Because low temperature service punishes poor detailing more than poor foam, we review the support spacing, the contraction allowance and the joint layout with your engineer. That review is part of the quotation, not an extra, and it is why our shells hold up on terminals that run continuously for years.
Each shipment carries a joint schedule keyed to line numbers, so the crew can match each section to the correct pipe run. Where lines run outdoors the shells are supplied pre-clad with aluminium, and a system tested to minus 80 C is available on request.
Key Advantages
- Moulded shells stay stable through sharp cool down
- Closed cell foam with water absorption below five percent
- Rated for service from minus 80 to 100 C
- Sealed vapour barrier prevents ice formation in the foam
- Supplied with contraction allowance guidance for LNG lines
- Factory made elbows and tees match the straight sections

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How low a temperature can the shell take?
A: Service range is minus 80 to 100 degrees, and the shell is checked for contraction at the lowest design temperature.
Q: Is a vapour barrier necessary?
A: For cryogenic duty it is essential, because moisture in the foam freezes and cracks the cell structure.
Q: Can sections be supplied pre-clad?
A: Yes, with aluminium or stainless cladding applied in the factory for outdoor and terminal service.
Q: How do you handle pipe contraction?
A: We provide a joint layout with contraction allowances, and expansion joints are included where runs exceed thirty metres.
